Too Comfortable
Talley's normal position!!!
Exodus 1
I love our dog. Her name is Talley. She is a beautiful beagle/German shepherd mix. Her fur is soft and she is very well tempered. After twelve years of having her in our life I have noticed that she has the gift of napping. In fact I am pretty confident that 20 hour a day are filled with naps and sleep. Our children will play with her ears and paws and she won't even budge. Don't get me wrong she loves walks and to play but that usually brings even longer naps. Yeah, I totally envy her. She is a very comfortable and comforting dog.
I have been reading through Exodus. Over the last several years I have spent a lot of time in the New Testament. So, now I turn to early Israelite history to see myself and my God. I recently taught through Abraham to Joseph (I am also reading that with my son). So, now I turn to Moses.
When I ready that first chapter I think of Talley. Jacob's family is now very comfortable in Egypt. Living life day to day, having children, going to the market, building homes, and even worshiping. They had grown so comfortable that they began simply assuming that everything is alright. In fact, I think that had God not stepped in they would have stayed indefinitely. That is our nature. Self-preservation and comfort that is. You see we like our ruts and routine. God does not.
In reality the Israelites were not much of a threat to the Egyptians. They were very happy to plod along and worship God. They would not have left Egypt on their own. I understand that. We like to set up patterns and build ruts. Those things do not fit into God's plan. God needed to draw his people back to him and his promises (Genesis 15:13-16). He does not get comfortable or distracted. He is constantly working out his purposes. Though pain lay ahead for the Israelites; so does their freedom and the land that God had promised.
Have I become comfortable? Am I willing to endure while God prepares and leads me? Am I willing to learn and walk with him through it all?
